Geneviève Claisse a guest of ENGEL Fine art auctioneers | March 2010

Geneviève Claisse (b. 1935 in Quiévy, Northern France), one of the great icons of abstract-geometric art in Europe, visited E N G E L FINE ART AUCTIONEERS in Koblenz in March 2010 at a personal invitation.

At the age of 19, Geneviève Claisse turned to abstract geometry, a direction that she has not abandoned to this day but has consistently developed it further. In 1959 she became Auguste Herbin’s (1882-1960) assistant, lived and worked in Paris. In 1993 the catalog raisonné de l’oeuvre peint, written by her, was published for Herbin’s paintings and sculptures and can be found as a standard work in numerous auction houses, galleries and museums. The reason for the visit was the appraisal and certification of a painting by Auguste Herbin that was auctioned by us in February 2010 and has not yet been listed.

In addition to our technical discussions, there was a lively personal, sometimes exuberantly cheerful exchange of ideas. As we said goodbye, Madame Claisse, who had obviously taken a liking to Koblenz, promised to visit our beautiful city more extensively soon.
